Course Description
This course provides students with a review of the entire process of the writing art - generation of ideas, choosing and narrowing a topic, awareness of audience and purpose, organization and drafting ideas, revision and clarification, and finally polishing, editing, and publishing. Emphasis is placed on improving organizational ability, coherence and unity. Grammar and usage are dealt with as the need arises. Students should be prepared to read, speak, listen, present and (re)view in various formats - individually, with partners, in groups, and as a whole class. |
Preparation/Organization
Make a sincere effort - engage actively in the classes and as you do the assigned work, be open to new ideas and methods, follow suggestions and improve where you can, learn from your mistakes, get extra help when you need it. Due to the vigorous pace and nature of the course, it is your responsibility to catch up, find out and complete homework assignments, hand in work due, and reschedule (as soon as possible) all missed tests, presentations, and due dates if you must be absent. That being said, students who attend on time with assignments done, appropriate materials, and are ready to learn are most successful. Self responsibility is the key to developing safe and respectful learning environments...'I own my thoughts, language, behaviours, actions, and outcomes.' Being self responsible allows us to move forward to a full life, deeper learning, and an attitude that does not blame others. |
Course Assessment
You will learn and be successful if you do the work. Listen carefully for instructions, write them down if there is no handout, and expect them to be due next class unless otherwise directed. Due date policy: Hand in work on time. '2 days due, 2 days late' (e.g. if it's due Monday, it will be on time Monday and Tuesday, but late Wednesday and Thursday for half marks). Extensions: Talk to me before the due date if you could be late (or on the due date if something unforeseen comes up) - just be honest about why. Ask for an extension if you will need one, and you will probably get one. If you organize your time and plan ahead, it will work out. Demonstration of Learning: If you have a true desire to express what you have learned in a different way, or need to show that you understand something that you missed, there are some assessment alternatives you can find out about from your teacher. Plagiarism - copying of work is not allowed. It should be noted that the copying of any work without naming the source (i.e. from the book, the internet) is also plagiarism. If you plagiarize you will redo the assignment. Much of the writing will be in-class. Nevertheless, all evidence of the writing process, including hand written in-class drafts, must be included to receive a mark. Requirements will be specified.
